I hit the dog squarely in the backside while doing 35-40 mph.

Dog flies out of the woods and chased my friend ahead of me. Short version of the story: Flying down a hill. I've hated driving on that road ever since. I found out two days later from another neighbor that her husband had just died the week before. I took the body to her vet for her and brought her flowers the next day, but somehow I still think about that poor old woman and her old sheep dog. She was very nice and kept saying that it wasn't my fault, but I still wanted to crawl into a dark hole at that moment. I felt like dirt when I finally found her place, knocked, and this elderly old woman answerted the door. She apparently never lets him off the leash in the back yard, but he had somehow managed to get out that night. An elderly woman that lived about 1/4 mile down the road. It took me a bit to find the owner after talking to a few neighbors in the area. I will never forget the horrible sound that followed or the sinking feeling when I told the owner. It was oddly like in a movie where everything slows down and happens like it's underwater. I swerved into the other lane and he jumped into that lane at te exact same time. At that point I was only about 20 feet from him. I was only going about 35 mph, but it was night so I didn't see him until the headlights swung full around.

I must say I'm going to be gun shy for a while when I see a dog approaching. I didn't really hear it until it was over. I talked to the owner afterwards & he said he thought he'd been hit by a car he made such a loud cry. Has anyone else had this happen? I would have bet money against it as I've been chased probably 1,000 times. I have odd bruises & can hardly bend my right leg today (because I landed on my knee, sort of). My bike seems fine (scratches on both STI's), no dents (it's a Cannondale CAAD7 team- which surprises me), & some scratches on the right chainstay (luckily my bike's not painted). This one went right under me & I ran over his middle. He came out bounding and normally a dog will either run ahead or turn to run behind. Yesterday afternoon I ran right over a big sheep dog on my bike. In all this time I've never hit an animal. I'm almost 30 yrs old & have probably driven 200,000 miles in a car.
